anthills (or: termite mounds)
picture 1c

Riding along the road, a strange sight immediately caught my eye - anthills (or: termite mounds). In the north of the Northern Territory these anthills (made of clay by ants) looked like huge pinnacles up to four metres high. But travelling south, the anthills became smaller and smaller. It looked as if the ants in the tropical climate had more construction spirit than their cousins in the dryer zone towards the desert. When I reached a more desert-like region about 800 kilometres from Darwin, the ants were capable of building nothing more than a bump-like heap of a few inches, pathetically pointing upward.
