Katherine, the first real town at 340 km.
picture 1e

Three days after leaving Darwin and with 340 kilometres on the odometer, I reached Katherine, the first real town along the Stuart highway. Along with traffic lights and many shops, Katherine offers services for a very large area.

I took my time in Katherine and spent the whole afternoon shopping and doing maintenance on the bike. I bought two small watertanks which I could mount on the front and tie to the handlebars. This increased my water capacity so now I could carry as much as nine litres of drinking water. Later, this appeared to be sufficient in the desert. picture 1g I stayed in a backpacker's hotel and in such places you can meet many other world travellers. Even in Katherine. Considering the fact that there aren't many other backpackers' hotels in the Northern Territory, Katherine was an important stop - for me, my bike, supplies and social contacts.

I arranged water containers in the front
