flag Forty days' bike tour across Australia, by Jan Boonstra.

The most striking element of this trip was the long, long endless road through the amazingly vast countryside. When you want to enjoy a cross- country trip through Australia, you must be fascinated by long distances and ever proceeding horizons. I regard myself as a move-on move-on move-on freak, so I could survive. But even for me, the trip tended sometimes to get boring.

The countryside does not change much, contrary to a continent like Europe. There are not many hills, only in the southeast part of the country. The land is mostly very flat and the road is straight to the horizon. The cars on the road made me feel that I kept contact with civilization, a lifeline in case I should have a serious problem. About 50 cars per hour passed me. Some were road trains, huge truck combinations. They are most responsible for all the dead kangaroos on and along the road. I never felt threatened by the traffic. The traffic was too sparse for that. Most people waved at me and I waved back.
