Forty days' bike tour across Australia, by Jan Boonstra.
Mission fulfilled: in Port Augusta I reached the sea
Another landmark on this tour was Port Augusta because of its location. Port Augusta lies at the top end of the Spencer Gulf, and has a direct connection with the sea. By reaching this place, I had achieved my principle goal: cycling from coast to coast across Australia. At this point, I had cycled 3,200 kilometres. However, I had set my target on Melbourne, and that meant another 1,400 kilometres to go. The shortest route would be via Adelaide and then straight to Melbourne. The most scenic route, however, was the "Great Ocean Road" along the coast. I choose to head east first rather than take the "Great Ocean Road," then travel through the Murray River Valley. Why? The most important reason was to avoid possible bad weather coming from the ocean. It was nearly winter and the risk of strong coastal winds with rain and cold temperatures was not appealing.
