Agricultural landscape in South Australia
picture 7b

The state of South Australia offers visitors and residents alike an extreme in climate zones and therefore, extremes also in landscapes. To the north are Oodnadatta and Coober Pedy, the driest and hottest places of the country. To the south coast, a humid sea climate dominates, which can be cool in the summer. South of Port Augusta, the climate is wet enough for agriculture. After weeks of bush and desert, I saw farmhouses and herds of sheep. Sometimes I rode through villages. In some villages that I found pleasant, I stopped to rest and enjoy a cup of coffee.

In this part of the country, between Adelaide and the Murray River Valley, there were also interesting towns, like Burra, Morgan and Renmark. These towns, with their colonial style buildings, created a countryside atmosphere. This atmosphere was especially found in the typical hotels. These hotels, in remarkable contrast to the roadhouses and motels along the Stuart Highway, provided cheap accommodation, but rarely with a private bath or toilet in the room.
