Arrived at the finish: Melbourne city centre

I reached the outskirts of Melbourne a bit late in the evening. I chose to stay in a motel on the northern edge of town, to slowly savor the completion of my grand tour. In the morning, I rode into town.

Melbourne! I made it! I felt like a winner when I rode through downtown Melbourne and for some time, I kept on cycling around in the centre, just to prolong the triumphant feeling. I lodged in the same motel on the northern edge of the city for two nights to catch my flight back to Hong Kong on the following day. What I liked best of Melbourne was the shopping centre "Melbourne Central", built over an old 'shot tower'. The shot tower was originally used to make shot for shot-guns. The architects had conserved the historical old building, integrating a modern shopping mall. This was a masterpiece of modern architecture.

picture 8d I arrived at the airport the next day, having logged 4,630 kilometres on the odometer. This was slightly less than my 1970 Lapland tour of 4,850 km. Both tours were completed in six weeks. However, this Australian tour was definitely the most exciting one, to date.
