Notes from Korea 1998: An Account by Mike Blackwell
View Looking North from the Unification Observatory
“...Here at the easternmost front line of Korea, you can enjoy the beauty of Keum Kang or Diamond
Mountain, the most beautiful mountain in Korea, while watching the Korean Peninsula divided into
two....We hope that you will enjoy your visit and your visit will advance the peaceful reunification of
Korea as fifty million Koreans are eagerly yearning for it....Please follow the lowland along the coast
about 700 m to the north, where you will see an island which protrudes from the land toward the sea.
This island is Song Do. South Korea stretches up to the island, beyond which lies North Korea. The
demarcation line starts at the island and extends west for 250 km, dividing the peninsula with the pain
and agony of the separated families..”
