On this flight, I had the rare opportunity to see the sun rise in the west. The earth revolves from east to west and and does this faster than any standard airliner can fly, at least at the equator. But near the north pole and the south pole things are different. During this flight, in the winter of 1980, I reached the highest latitude I've ever been on and that was at 80° north over arctic Canada. Over there, it remains dark throughout the day. When coming nearer to Calgary, it was early afternoon, local time. Coming into lower latitudes, the sun shines even in wintertime and I saw it coming up, in the south west.
