Hamel Links

The Adventure of Hendrik Hamel
The very first contacts between Korea and "the West" came through the crew of a Dutch ship wrecked on Cheju-do. It is an amazing story and Henny Savenije, who was an actor in a TV-series about this story, dedicated a beautiful homepage to this remarkable part of Korean history.
Transcription of Hamel's journal
Here you find the complete manuscript of Hamel's journal in image files, as well as the transcription of the manuscript and the translation into English. By Henny Savenije.
Hoetink's annexes
The account of Hoetink of Hamel's story contains a number of interesting documents in annexes, in relation to Hamel's story. Revised by Henny Savenije, who added also related interesting documents. Also translated in English; you are about to enter the only existing source of these documents in English.
Historic map of Cheju-do
A very detailed map of Cheju-do in the 18th century; the topography will certainly not have differed much from the time when Hendrick Hamel and his fellow crewmembers shipwrecked here.
Visit to North Korea by H. Weltevreden (in Dutch)
The specialty of this interesting site, with pics from the North, is that the author is likely a descendant of Pak Yon (Jan Janse Weltevree) who, having been a Dutch castaway himself, became an influential person in the King's court by the time Hamel entered Korea. Hamel reported the surprising meeting with Pak Yon in detail.
the Jiyeongnok document
A recently discovered (1999) document about the shipwreck of the 'Sperwer', translated and commented by dr. G.K. Ledyard.
