biography Occupation: Director, producer, screenwriter
In 1968, a film that had been left to play for the drive-in movie audiences, quite unexpectedly grasped the American public's attention and was quickly catapulted into film history. A relatively unknown director suddenly gained a well-deserved cult-status and the respect of countless moviegoers. The movie - The Night of The Living Dead, the director - George A. Romero, a small time director of shorts and commercials. Produced on a minuscule budget, Romero was able to create an experience that would haunt people for years. Influenced by such works as Carnival of Souls and Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, Night of the Living Dead was all together shocking, while at the same time, packed full of social commentary on the state of the world at that time. Much to it's credit, it still contains the power over it's audience today as much as it did when it first debuted. It was also a good forecast of the films to come from this young director. 1968³â, ÇÑ ¿µÈ°¡ µå¶óÀ̺êÀÎ ±ØÀå °ü°´µé¿¡°Ô »ó¿µµÇ¾ú°í ¿¹±âÄ¡ ¸øÇÑ ÀÏÀÌ ¹ú¾îÁ³´Ù. ±× ¿µÈ´Â ¹Ì±¹ ´ëÁßµéÀ» °ü½ÉÀ» »ç·ÎÀâ¾Ò°í °ð¹Ù·Î ¿µÈ»ç¿¡ ȹÀ» ±ß°ÔµÇ¾ú´Ù. ºñ±³Àû ¾Ë·ÁÁöÁö ¾ÊÀº °¨µ¶Àº °©ÀÚ±â ÄÃÆ®Àû ÁöÀ§¸¦ ¾ò¾ú°í ¼ö¸¹Àº ¿µÈÆÒµéÀÇ Á¸°æÀ» ¹Þ°Ô µÇ¾ú´Ù. ±× ¿µÈ´Â '»ì¾ÆÀÖ´Â ½ÃüÀÇ ¹ã'À̾ú°í, ±× °¨µ¶Àº ´ÜÆí°ú ±¤°íµîÀ» ¸¸µç ªÀº °æ·ÂÀÇ Á¶Áö A. ·Î¸Þ·Î¿´´Ù. ¼ÒÀÚº»À¸·Î ¸¸µé¾îÁ³À½¿¡µµ, ·Î¸Þ·Î´Â ¼ö³âµ¿¾È »ç¶÷µéÀ» »ç·ÎÀâ´Â °æÇèÀ» ¸¸µé¾î³¾ ¼ö ÀÖ¾ú´ø °ÍÀÌ´Ù. George Romero continued the story with Dawn of the Dead, making a simple sequel into something of it's own entity. Instead of a standard rehash of the first film, Romero delivered a film that can easily stand on it's own and is just as original as the first film. Setting the majority of the action of the film in a shopping mall, allowed for Romero to comment on consumerism, as well as the materialistic needs of America while presenting a dark apocalyptic horror that the characters refuse to face. Another of Romero's films from the seventies is Martin, a modern vampire story with a new outlook. Again, Romero achieves in packing what could have been a standard horror film, full of social implications. Martin is a young man that craves and must have blood. In an odd way, the film is about an addict that tries to go astray from his addiction, but always finds it coming back. At the same time, it is an example of the struggles between the young and old as well, as Martin's grandfather offers no assistance to him and only serves to condemn him, assuming there is no hope for him. 70³â´ë¿¡ ³ª¿Â ·Î¸Þ·ÎÀÇ ¶Ç ´Ù¸¥ ¿µÈ´Â »õ·Î¿î ¿ÜÇüÀ» ¶í Çö´ëÀÇ ¹ìÆÄÀ̾ ´ëÇÑ À̾߱âÀÎ '¸¶Æ¾'ÀÌ´Ù. ¶Ç´Ù½Ã ·Î¸Þ·Î´Â ÀüÇüÀûÀΠȣ·¯ Çʸ§ÀÌ µÉ ¼öµµ ÀÖ¾ú´ø ¿µÈ¿¡ »çȸÀûÀÎ ¾Ï½ÃµéÀ» °¡µæ ä¿ö³Ö¾ú´Ù. Romero is alive and well in the eighties and nineties as well, with shows such as Creepshow (a loving tribute to the EC horror comics from Romero's childhood), Day of the Dead (The third part to the living dead trilogy that once again achieves it's own identity, while further exploring the selfish needs of our society), Monkey Shines: An Experiment in Fear (An interesting Science vs. Nature film), The Dark Half (a well adapted version of horror star Stephen King's novel), and recently Two Evil Eyes (Another well paid tribute, this time to Edgar Allan Poe. Two stories are presented in this film, the other directed by Italian horror director, Dario Argento). ·Î¸Þ·Î´Â 80³â´ë¿Í 90³â´ë¿¡µµ Ȱµ¿Çϰí ÀÖ´Ù. Unfortunately, Romero has yet to be truly accepted by the public. His films are generally welcomed with rave reviews and raised eyebrows, but he has yet to achieve the true success that he deserves. Without a doubt, it will come, as he is truly one of the greatest directors that the horror genre has to offer. ºÒ¿îÇϰԵµ, ·Î¸Þ·Î´Â ¾ÆÁ÷ ´ëÁߵ鿡°Ô ÁøÁ¤À¸·Î ¹Þ¾Æµé¿©ÁöÁö´Â ¾Ê°í ÀÖ´Ù. ±×ÀÇ ¿µÈµéÀº ÀϹÝÀûÀ¸·Î ¿±¤ÀûÀÎ ¸®ºä¿Í ³î¶ó¿òÀ¸·Î ¹Þ¾Æµé¿©ÁöÁö¸¸, ±×°¡ ¹Þ¾Æ¾ßÇÒ¸¸ÅÀÇ ÁøÁ¤ÇÑ ¼º°øÀº ¾ÆÁ÷ ¾òÁö ¸øÇß´Ù.
