I came to know about Ham Radio in my elementary school years. In a cartoon
which came with a children's magazine, a young boy talked on the radio to far away
places and made good friendships through the radio.
It was really impressive to me and I thought it would be great to start such an
interesting hobby. But it wasn't so easy at that time in Korea for a little kid to get
useful information about getting into Ham Radio. After having tried for about a year,
just studying English which I thought to be the most important thing to talk to the
world, I gave up cause I couldn't find any people or clubs involved with Ham Radio.

Some years later,I accidentally got
the address of KARL (Korean
Amateur Radio League) and
joined the association. I first
started as SWL with an old
Hallicrafters S-40 receiver and a
big converter. Listening to Ham's
qso was a lot of fun and
sometimes I tested with a small
homebrew cw transmitter. Even
though it was an illegal operation, I experienced and learned how the radio signals
got to the other places.
After a good while, I was licensed as HM5KY in 1976, when I was a 1st grade High
School student. I was the youngest ham ever officially licensed in Korea at that time.
I also got a US call as AB6KT in 1992 and changed to N2KY in vanity call sign
system in 1997. However, I have never had a chance to use the call sign cause I
haven't been to the USA or related countries. Hopefully, someday in the future, the
call will be helpful for my dream of DX pedition.
