FINAL MOMENT
Brain Death and
Organ Transplantation
Doctors came together with serious looks to hold a special emergency
meeting at medical center of Ko-Sin university in Pusan ,Korea. They had to
deal with the first legal brain death case in pusan. They began to check
patient's conditions very carefully according to strict guideline by newly
accepted law about brain death and organ transplantation.
The brain is the most important organ in our body since it controls
every part of our body and mind. It is responsible for all activities and the
functions of internal organs, while ruling over all mental aspects such as
thought, consciousness, senses, emotions and memories. So, if there is minor
damage in one area in the brain, the consequences might be tremendous and many
crucial functions will be affected. Once damaged, brain cannot be revived or
replaced to resume its original function. If the damage is severe and the
patient falls into a comatose state, death is inevitable. In those cases of
brain death the patient can only live two weeks to a month maximum.
On the other hand, organs from the brain dead which are still alive and fresh,
are the most ideal for organ transplants to save the precious lives of the
terminally ill that might be lost otherwise. .

Finally after careful
investigation, a 39 year-old woman, who had been in a coma for several days
after collapsing, was officially declared brain dead. Her relatives allowed
doctors to use her organ for transplantation to save other patients' life.
They might believe that it was the only way to make something good comes of
her death. |
The operation began. After several hours of tough operating, doctors took out
her organs: liver, kindey, cornea and so on. Medical specialist started to bring
them to other hospitals all over the country.

At same time the patient who might have been a generous mother to her children
and a good wife to her husband faced the final moment and died.
