Note 1.
I have already dealt with the Korean transcription of Hendrik Janse's name in the introduction. He would appear to have been the second-ranking officer aboard the Sperwer, and become the leader of the survivors after the ship's captain, Reijnier Egbertse, died in the shipwreck. It is clear from the formula here that the Koreans recognized him as the group's leader. He was a very active one. He led a failed attempt to escape from Cheju by stealing a Korean boat, and in 1655, after the group had removed to Seoul, he tried once more to escape by intercepting the retinue of a Manchu ambassador who had just left the city for China. This effort too failed, and Hendrik Janse and a companion died in confinement a month or so later (Buys, pp. 10-12, 16-19; Ledyard, pp. 41, 59-63). Soon after that affair the castaways were removed to Ch lla province, and there is no clear word in either Korean or Dutch sources that any particular individual had the status of leader. If there was such a person, it may well have been the book keeper, Hendrik Hamel.
