Note 8.The context clearly indicates that "Towan" must be Taiwan. One can imagine plausible phonetic mutations of Tapowan (the Dutch name for Taiwan found in VOC records of the time) that could come out as Towan (Ch. Daowan), but I can find no record of such a name in Chinese or Korean source mateials. |
