**Scene opens with Michelle walking into Pilars room at the boarding house…
Michelle: (opening the door) Hey, do…
Danny: (working on the shelves, doesn’t see it’s Michelle) I don’t know where you want this stuff so…(turns around and sees Michelle) ummm….
Michelle: I just…I came here for Bill, I’m sorry…ummm…
Danny: It’s okay…
Michelle: I just need to get a book…
Danny: He’s not here…
Michelle: that is not here either…okay…I don’t mean to interrupt, I’m sorry…
Danny: No you’re not interrupting anything, I’m just…helping…did my sister…tell you to come up here?
Michelle: Yeah, she said Bill was going to be working on… the bookcase…right, your sister…
Danny: (putting his shirt back on) She ummm…look she’s a bit of a romantic…she has this crazy idea that we belong together…
***WE SEE THE LIGHT***
Michelle: Well you know there’s nothing wrong with being a little romantic…
Danny: (buttoning his shirt) Well, no…no…of course not…I mean…there’s just got to be…as long as there’s something…as long as there’s something to be romantic about…
Michelle: Right…
Danny: Anyway, umm…you don’t have to worry about…Pilar playing matchmaker anymore…
Michelle: Oh well Danny don’t get upset with her…I mean it wasn’t that big a deal, you know…
Danny: Oh I’m not upset with her…I just meant…I just meant you won’t have to worry about running into me anymore…
Michelle: What do you mean?
Danny: I’m leaving town tonight…
**Scene closes on an astonished looking Michelle…
**Scene opens with Michelle walking around the room and Danny is sitting on the bed unpacking some of Pilar’s things…
Michelle: You’re leaving…where?
Danny: Out west…
Michelle: Is this permanent?
Danny: Ummm…yeah….
**Manny music starts to play**
Michelle: Danny I really hope you’re not leaving because of me because if you are…I really hope we can work something out, I mean you just moved your sister into town you know…I…
Danny: Michelle…I’m not leaving cause of you…I have, my uncles out there and he’s got a business and he could use some help…it’s a good opportunity for me to…step in and manage things…and it’s also a great time to get the hell away from my mother…so…
Michelle: All right, so your uncle owns a business…is this…is this the same kind of business…I mean is it…
Danny: It’s food business…
Michelle: Okay…well great…you know I mean…uhhh…that’s great I know you wanted to get out of the…you know be…
Danny: Legitimate…you can say it, it’s not a dirty word…
Michelle: Yeah, I guess it’s not…it’s funny…
Danny: (walks over next to Michelle and picks up the drill) What?
Michelle: (Danny is standing right in front of her with his back to her - they are so close I expected her to reach out and touch him) Life…you know, I mean… how you sometimes meet the right people at the wrong time…
Danny: Yeah or in the wrong lifetime…
Michelle: Wrong way…
Danny: Yeah…
Michelle: I don’t know, I guess you never know who’s gonna come into your life and know what they’re gonna do and…how long they’re gonna stay…right…you know what I mean…
Danny: (walking away) Yeah, yeah I think I do…I do…(turns to look at her) I wanna tell you something…ummm, you know if we hadn’t run into each other I don’t think I’d be saying this but…*sigh* I have to…
**Scene closes showing Michelle with a look of anticipation on her face**
**Scene opens with Danny closing the door to the room…Michelle is sitting on the opposite side of the bed…she wipes her eyes as she stands…
Danny: I do want to say this it’s ummm…it’s important…
Michelle: (they are facing each other now) Danny whatever you have to say I wanna hear it…
Danny: Yeah…*sigh*…the other day…in the park I, uh…I said some things that…well they weren’t very nice…I was trying to make a point and I, I just went too far…I’m sorry I didn’t want to hurt you…
Michelle: It’s okay…it’s okay I mean I’ve said some things that I…didn’t mean…ummm…*sigh*
Danny: (smiles) I know if the circumstances had been different…
Michelle: Yeah, if they had been different…you know, right person, wrong time - wrong person, right time…it’s backwards, it’s backwards…
Danny: (big smile and sort of laughs) Yeah…
Michelle: but ummm…so you know this is good we’re moving on and…and forward and you’ve got this new life ahead of you and I’ve got school that I’m going back to…
Danny: I think you’re gonna be a great doctor…
Michelle: Thank you…
Danny: I do…yeah…
Michelle: Thanks I’m really looking forward to going back to school, you know…
Danny: And it’ll be nice to get back to your family I’m sure…all your friends…
Michelle: Yeah, that’ll be really nice…
Danny: Yeah…
Michelle: And you with this…with this job opportunity that’s great…you get a chance to get away from your mother which is something I know you’ve wanted…for a very long time…(Danny raises his arms triumphantly)
Danny: Yeah…
Michelle: (rubbing her hands on her face and in her hair) Okay…ummm…I need to…I need to give you something and it’s in the car…so I’m just gonna go get it…(walks to the door w/o looking at him) will you wait for me please?
Danny: Yeah, I’ll wait…
**Scene closes as an exasperated Danny sits on the side of the bed and puts his face in his hands**
**Scene opens and we see Danny still sitting on the bed…his mind starts to wander…we flashback to the I am a Man speech…
…you know you…you take a shower…and you ummm…you comb your hair…you…you rub lotion into your arms…and your shoulders…and you slip into a nightgown…and I’m…I’m sitting in bed…pretending…to read or listen to music or whatever but that’s not what I’m doing…I’m…I’m watching you…I’m trying not to…but I am…I do…I AM A MAN…and when you climb into bed with me…beside me, never touching, never touching…I lie there…awake…staring into the dark…aware of everything that you’re doing…of how you breathe…of the rustle of the sheets…and it takes… every ounce of my being… to not wanna reach out to you…
**Danny comes back into reality and we see Michelle outside the door trying to pull herself together…she walks in and looks and Danny…the scene closes on her face**
**Scene opens with Michelle walking into the room carrying something in her hand…during this scene they are both showing their emotions…
Michelle: Okay, ummmm…
Danny: What’s up?
Michelle: (pulls out the ring and hands it to Danny) I didn’t…really think I should keep this…
Danny: (speechless) No…no you shouldn’t…(looks down) look…uhhhh…I… I…I’m sorry that things…just couldn’t be different…
Michelle: Me too…*sighs*…bye…Danny…(turns and walks out the door)
Danny: (still looking down) Okay, take care of yourself…
**Show closes with Michelle outside the door…she puts her hands over her mouth and begins to cry…then she leans against the door…we go back inside and see Danny walking over to the other door…he leans against it and raises the ring to his forehead…he sighs…
